Ring every order once, then come home to rounds

Unified Quests is an independent game studio in Brighton, run by UNIFIED STUDIO LTD. We make mobile puzzle games for Android drawn from English change ringing, the old craft of sounding church bells in a shifting sequence instead of a tune.

A ringer never plays a melody. Each pull of a rope moves one bell a single place earlier or later, and the band works through orders until it arrives back where it began. That small rule hides a very large puzzle, and we think it deserves a home on a phone screen.

Plain Bob on four bells. The tinted figure is bell one, weaving down and back up through the order.

The three rules we build every quest on

SwapOnly neighbours trade places, and any bell may move at most one step per row.
Never repeatAn order that has already sounded is closed for the rest of that quest.
ReturnThe quest ends only when the bells fall back into rounds, the descending scale ringers start from.

On four bells there are twenty-four orders to find; on six there are seven hundred and twenty. We plan each tower to add one bell at a time, so that a new bell arrives only once the last feels familiar.

Principles we design to

  1. We design our games so that a quest can be paused after any row and picked up again without losing the thread.
  2. We trace the path of a single chosen bell on screen, because following one line is how real ringers learn a method.
  3. We keep the towers fictional, but their names and landscapes borrow from the chalk villages around the South Downs.
  4. We leave out timers, energy meters and paid shortcuts, so careful thinking is always the fastest route.
